What is a Chimney Cricket?

A chimney cricket is a ridge structure designed to divert water and debris on a roof. Generally found on the high side of a chimney, a cricket will keep water running down and off of the roof and keep from puddling up behind the chimney which could possibly cause a leak.

A cricket, often referred to as “saddles”, also refers to the transition from one roof area to another, normally the same pitch as the rest of the roof, but not always. Smaller crickets are covered with metal flashing, and larger ones can be covered with the same material as the rest of the roof.

Chimney Repair – Cricket Built to Resolve Chimney Leak

Building a Chimney CricketMr. Stevens in Roswell, GA called Pro Roofing & Siding due to a leak in his chimney. The previous owner had a new roof installed by a company that either cut corners or did not understand the importance of redirecting water and debris. This was a very easy diagnosis for Pro Roofing & Siding to understand and fix Mr. Stevens’ leak.

Chimney Repair – Flashing

Here we took the existing shingles off the roof around the back side (high end) and used the existing chimney flashing.

Chimney Repair – Cricket Framing

To frame out the chimney cricket, we begin with building a 2″ x 4″ frame support bolted to the chimney. Typically, the angle of the frame will have the same pitch as the roof.

Chimney Repair – Cricket DeckingNew Chimney Cricket

Using plywood, we install the decking for the chimney cricket creating a small roof type structure.

Finishing Chimney Cricket

Once the frame is built, we will finish the cricket the same as the roof. We install ice and water seal, such as GAF’s WeatherWatch®, over the new cricket and in the valleys created. There is metal step flashing installed up against the chimney. We then install the shingles we removed earlier in the project if they are in good condition or match the roof’s shingles with the best option available.
